Last weekend, Multichoice and it’s sister company Mnet
hosted a successful African magic Viewer’s Choice Awards (AMVCA). The show has
been acclaimed as one of the best event ever organised on Nigeria soil. However
beneath all the glitz, there are some dirty politics being played in the Cable
company firm. We reported last week that the media house had forced the
Managing Director of Mnet, Biola Alabo to resign from her position. This she
did last week the shock of many.
But not soon after, we gather that there was some pressure
on the Multichoice to reinstate Biola Alabi. But she was not returned to her
original position, she was made the Director of special projects. There was a
press a release to the effect, it reads; “M-Net wishes to confirm the strategic
evolution of M-Net Africa MD Biola Alabi's role with the pan African
broadcaster. Having served in this role at M-Net Africa for five highly
successful years during which time she brought her well-honed business
perspective and creative insights to one of Africa's biggest entertainment
companies, she has taken on a new strategic role with the organization, that of
Managing Director: Special Projects. In
this capacity her portfolio now focuses primarily on the broadcaster’s flagship
productions including but not limited to the AfricaMagic Viewers’ Choice Awards,
the popular reality super series Big Brother Africa and several exciting new
initiatives. Meanwhile, reflecting the
broadcaster’s rapid growth in the market, M-Net has named Mrs Wangi Mba-Uzoukwu
as its first Regional Director, West Africa.”

To many, they see this as a kind of demotion for the Havard
trained professional. She was already in charge of Big Brother and AMVCA and
other projects as the MD. Now her portfolio has been reduced. Even some staff
at Multichoice are not happy at the development. Remember that earlier in the
year, Segun Fayose was also removed as the Head, Corporate Communications of
the company. He has now been replaced by Caroline Oghuma who is the Public
relations Manager.
However, some of the people concerned at Multichoice says
that there is no conspiracy going on. She confirmed that yes there was some
shuffle going on at Multi-choice but it has nothing to do with witch hunting
anyone. From our reports last week, we quoted a staff who said that the removals
was to prepare room for South Africans to take up the positions. Our new source
say there is no such thing. She says that the story was relayed to us by
mischief makers who only want to unsettle and put dirt on the name of the
company.
It is hard to know what is really going on at Multichoice
for now. Even some of the staff does not know what to make of it all. However, our source says this is not the end
of the sacks. “There will be more people to go, by the end of the year a lot of
top staff will be gone,” the sources said.
