Moscow, another failed outing for Nigeria - ends 24th

The final attempt by Team Nigeria to add to their medal list on the last day of competition at the 14th edition of the IAAF World Athletics Championship in Moscow, Russia ended in futility as the quartet in the 4x100m women’s relay event failed to make it out from their heat let alone to the podium.
The development meant Nigeria signed off with two medals- a silver and a bronze medal, both from one athlete, Blessing Okagbare, who thus helped Nigeria to finish in the 24th position on the medals table.
Hosts, Russia topped the medals table with a total of seven gold, (more after the cut)
four silver and six bronze medals closely followed by the United States, Jamaica and Kenya who finished second, third and fourth respectively.
Team Nigeria will be grateful to 24-year old Okagbare who ended the country’s 14-year medal drought at the IAAF flagship event.
Okagbare raced into the history books last Friday, when she grabbed a bronze medal in the 200m final to become Nigeria’s first athlete ever to achieve such fate in the IAAF World Championship. She had picked a silver medal earlier on in the tournament, finishing second in the long jump event last Sunday.
At the start of the tournament, Okagbare had aimed for four medals but came sixth in the 100 metres, missing out there and also in the relays.
