Baseball to be Nigeria's second biggest sport

Ronke Champion-Adeyemi of Peace Hospice & Palliative Care Chicago, Illinois, United States, has donated new baseball equipment to the Nigerian Baseball and Softball Association.
The equipment includes balls, bats, gloves, helmet, catchers' mitt and sets of catchers' equipment, all enough to strengthen four baseball teams.
Champion-Adeyemi, who is the CEO/President of Peace Hospice, said instruction has been given to the vendor of the equipment to ship it directly to the Secretary General of the NBSA in Abuja, Nigeria.
According to her, the assistance is focused on essentials that can start baseball teams, strengthen old teams and thus make them strong for competitions within Nigeria and outside.
She reiterated that her group of experienced volunteer baseball coaches from the United States will arrive Nigeria to begin series of skills impartation on Nigerian coaches and players through clinics and courses.
She said the idea of her group is to raise first-class Nigerian teams that will be the envy of the whole world in a short while.

The Secretary General of NBSA, Mr. Kehinde Laniyan, confirmed that his federation is truly developing and working on a programme to promote and develop baseball with assistance coming from Champion-Adeyemi's group.
He explained further that the first leg of this initiative has been scheduled to kick-off in June 2012 with some programmes in Abuja, Lagos, Ilorin and Yenagoa.
Laniyan said the eyes of Nigeria are on the Little League World Series, IBAF Under-12 Cup, All African Games and IBAF Under-16 Cup.
The aim is to see the sport elevate to the level where it can compete with popular sports like Football
